Hi! We're the faces behind Perky Plants, our names are Amy and Steve. We wanted to share a little bit about us and how Perky Plants developed.
We've been together for over 7 years, 6 of which we have lived together. We've always had plants in the home, but over the last 4 years they've certainly taken over every surface they could possibly land on.
And that is mostly down to me; hi, Amy here, writing this for you, you lovely human who has decided to take the time to read this section of the site. Let's face it, this is not the most interesting section!
During my first year at university, I got the minimalism, decluttering bug. I went through almost everything and suddenly there was a lot of blank surface space. It seemed only logical to fill those spaces with plants!
I love nature and bringing it indoors felt so right to me.
Steve always encouraged this, he would often be the reason I'd buy a plant when I wasn't 100% sure about it! Such an enabler, what a keeper, eh?!
I enjoyed watching the plants grow, revelling in the smallest new growth, the first new leaf in my care, the first bloom! Watching the way the plants interacted with their environment. Figuring out what was wrong when they weren't at their happiest. Caring and tending to the plants became a therapeutic hobby for me. I started documenting their growth through photography, I loved finding different artsy angles to shoot them from, having the piercing white background of our walls making them pop on my phone screen.
I had all these beautiful (in my opinion) photos and no one to share them with. I knew there was a plant community out there in the world of Instagram, and I had the ideal of sharing my photos there, but not wanting to bombard my friends on my personal account. So, @perky.plants was born!
I decided on the name during a weekend away with Steve in Exeter. I bought my Philodendron Squamiferum that weekend from a gorgeous little shop and when I signed up to Instagram with the new account, I had a secret little hope that one day, one day I could perhaps have a plant shop of my own.
Over the next 6 months or so, we carried on with life (in amongst a pandemic!), going to work and coming home, tending to the plants and @perky.plants became this wonderful escape from reality. I've made so many friends there, I've even met a few in real life, I know they will be people I'll have in my life for many years to come!
Steve and I have joked about quitting our jobs and opening a shop so many times I've lost count! Steve has become more involved with the plants, which I have absolutely loved and we continued to say "let's just open up the shop".
One day, Steve turns around to me and say's "why don't we do it?... Is it just a pipe dream, or is it a real dream? Do you really want it?".
And here we are, a few months later, launching our online shop! It's hard to believe. We have dreams of where this can take us, and we are so so happy that you're coming along for the ride!
Thank you for reading, thank you for being here, thank you for supporting our shop.
